Here we go with the frequently aksed questions.
1. What buttercream recipe do you use, and for what do you use it?
- I use an 1:1 (easy) buttercream recipe. This means for every gram of butter, you use the same amount of sugar powder. So this means 250 gram unsalted butter, 250 gram sugarpowder, 2 table spoons of hot water and a teaspoon of vanilla. I use this recipe for crumbcoating the cake to icing for my cupcakes.
2. What do i need if i want to start making cakes like you do?
- When i started i had an baking pan and the cheapest fondant/ marzipan out there. I think you need a few things so you can make a good start:
- 1 smoother
- 2 spatulas
- 2 or 3 sizes baking pans
- Toothpicks
- a good recipe for buttercream
- a good recipe for bisquit
- a small and a big roling pin.
Don't give up when it does not go the way you want it to go the first time. Remember that my first cakes looked like flying UFO's with chicken on it.
3. How long did it take to make cakes like you do?
I have been caking for 4 years now and i am still improving and learning everyday. It all depends on your dedication, love for the art and how much you can and want to invest (time and money) in this.
4. How do you fill a cake?
Okay you need a cake leveler (a special saw). There are different ones out there, i use the cheapest one i could find. Here comes the trick, get 3 (or more, that depenst on the number of layer fillings) toothpicks (buy a lot of them, you are going to use those a lot). You start with cutting the bottom layer, put you saw where you want to cut, and press the saw in to the cake. The make a start with a bread knife, so the saw is not going to press your cake inwards. Keep on going till you reached the other end of the cake. Repeat with the other layers. Now get (i usaully do 2 layers) put a tooth pick in each layer, underneed each other.
Take the two top layers of, and start filling the cake, get on layer and place the toothpick straight above the toothpick in the other layer cake. Repeat this process, till done.
5.Where do you get you inspiration?
Pintererst, google, facebook, twitter, instagram, books and every day life. You need to learn to be open to it. For me, this was a thing i had to learn. Instead of looking at a flower as an flower, i now look at the structure of a flower. Instead of looking at a cute bird, like a cute bird, i look at it like i want to make if from fondant.
6. What works better for me, Fondant or marzipan?
The only way to find out is to play with it. I went through a couple of different brands of fondant before i got the right one. It has a lot to do with where you life (heat, humidity etc), and what works for you personally. I prefer a fondant that is needs some though loving. I can't work with fondant that is really soft and flexible to begin with. I don't know why, i just can't work with it.
